May Measure Month: A Global Initiative for Better Cardiovascular Health

Join the global initiative, May Measure Month, promoting better cardiovascular health. Explore the significance and impact of this movement worldwide.

May Measurement Month (MMM) is an annual global campaign initiated by the International Society of Hypertension (ISH) and the World Hypertension League (WHL) to raise awareness about the importance of blood pressure measurement and control. Held throughout the month of May, this collaborative effort aims to highlight the significance of early detection and management of hypertension, a major risk factor for cardiovascular diseases (CVDs). In this blog post, we will explore the background of MMM, its objectives, and the impact it has made in promoting better cardiovascular health worldwide.

Understanding Hypertension and its Consequences

Hypertension, commonly known as high blood pressure, is a chronic medical condition that occurs when the force of blood against the artery walls is consistently too high. If left untreated, hypertension can lead to severe complications such as heart attacks, strokes, kidney disease, and even premature death. Shockingly, despite being preventable and manageable, hypertension remains a major global health concern, affecting billions of individuals worldwide.

The Birth of May Measurement Month

Recognizing the need for a comprehensive awareness campaign to combat hypertension and its associated health risks, the ISH and the WHL launched May Measurement Month in 2017. The initiative was inspired by World Hypertension Day, observed annually on May 17th, which serves as a platform to promote hypertension awareness and prevention.

Objectives of May Measurement Month

The primary objective of May Measurement Month is to encourage individuals to have their blood pressure checked, particularly those who have never been screened or are unaware of their hypertensive status. By providing free blood pressure screenings at various locations, such as clinics, hospitals, pharmacies, community centers, and even workplaces, MMM aims to make blood pressure measurements accessible to everyone.

Key Activities and Participation

During May Measurement Month, numerous organizations, healthcare professionals, and volunteers come together to conduct blood pressure screenings across different regions and countries. Hridaymitra Cardia Clinic and Hridaymitra Foundation have volunteered for this cause over last 4 years. These screenings are conducted by trained personnel using validated blood pressure measurement devices and protocols recommended by the ISH. In addition to measuring blood pressure, participants also receive counselling and educational materials to promote a better understanding of hypertension and its management.

MMM has successfully expanded its reach year after year, with an increasing number of countries participating in the campaign. The involvement of local healthcare providers, non-profit organizations, and governmental bodies has been instrumental in driving the success and impact of this global initiative. Dr Rahul Sawant, Cardiologist from Pune has been instrumental in driving this campaign across Pune.

Impacts and Achievements

Since its inception, May Measurement Month has achieved remarkable results and made a significant impact on global cardiovascular health. By raising awareness about hypertension and offering free screenings, MMM has helped identify a large number of previously undiagnosed individuals with high blood pressure. The campaign has played a crucial role in reducing the burden of undiagnosed hypertension, promoting early intervention, and connecting people with healthcare services for proper management.

Furthermore, MMM has contributed to improved public awareness of cardiovascular health, empowering individuals to make positive lifestyle changes and take control of their blood pressure. By targeting those who are unaware of their hypertensive status, MMM has effectively brought the importance of blood pressure measurement to the forefront of public health discussions and encouraged proactive health management.

Conclusion

May Measurement Month is an invaluable global initiative that has significantly contributed to the prevention and management of hypertension and related cardiovascular diseases. By offering free blood pressure screenings and educational resources, MMM empowers individuals to take charge of their health and seek appropriate medical intervention when needed. Through its widespread participation and impact, May Measurement Month continues to save lives and promote better cardiovascular health worldwide.
